Navy Seal Swimming - There are four main strokes used in racing: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle (crawling) – but depending on your strength level and experience in the water, and what you're trying to achieve, you may be able to. More moves with
One strike you can learn is the Side Combat Strike. It's a variation on the typical sideway style, designed to be relaxed and efficient when cruising long distances in open water or surf zones. It was created to allow Navy SEALs to float while carrying heavy equipment. This side-fighting style video is a great source of information.

The strike itself is a combination of major strikes. It includes arm movements similar to body spins such as breaststroke, flutter kicks, freestyle and backstroke, and the option to include a dolphin kick from the butterfly style. If you are familiar with competitive racing strokes, you will find it difficult to learn the sideways style, as you must allow yourself to break some of the key rules of each established stroke.

The side combat style is designed to aid speed and ease, so the body profile should be flat underwater. Instead of letting your feet sink, you should try to engage your core to ensure you stay parallel in the water.
During the movement, like a sidestroke, take a moment to breathe from floating on your side to lying face down in the water. This rotation allows for multiple kicks and pull styles to be used within one strike, giving you the opportunity to use multiple muscle groups.
To help with this rotation, figure out which side is your dominant side while swimming. Typically, right-handed swimmers prefer to drop their left shoulder and side into the water, while left-handed swimmers prefer to drop their right. You can learn to swim either way, but choose one to focus on first. Float on your side, face down in the water and float on your stomach, then turn onto your side. While floating on your stomach, make sure you also practice air control by exhaling while your face is underwater.
Remember to stay close to the surface of the water while working on your body alignment. You should never be underwater while swimming sidestroke.

Combat Side Punch Kick is the main force that propels you forward. While your arms can help you with speed, long distances, or lifting weights, your legs will do most of the work.
To initiate the kick, rise to your side and perform a scissor kick. Your top leg closest to the surface of the water will extend forward and your bottom leg will extend behind you. Bring your legs together to push forward in the water.
As you practice this, make sure you have enough momentum to move through the water after kicking. This slide is very similar to the breaststroke, and you should be able to slide through the water without stopping or losing your footing. Practice your kick and glide until you feel comfortable.
Once you're comfortable with the kick, turn your side body position into a prone position on the sliding side. In the prone position, you'll kick to extend your glide longer than normal. You can do this with an underwater kick or some dolphin kicks.
The Story Behind The Birth Of The Navy Seals
The arm should be submerged throughout the movement. At most one hand should penetrate the surface of the water.
Begin to extend your arms above your head in a streamlined position as you move over your stomach. As you lower your shoulders to turn your body back to the side, the arm (whichever side is closest to the surface of the water) pulls fully down until the leg pulls toward the hip, similar to a freestyle pull. This helps to pull and rotate the body to the side. The forearm should still be above the head. Don't let her fall into the water and mess up her position.
You can take an extra wrist strike if you want, but it's not necessary if you don't feel comfortable doing it. If you choose to use the lower arm, you will pull after placing the upper arm on your leg. Once both hands are resting on your legs, pull them toward your midline and stretch back toward the streamline as you lie on your stomach.
Combat Side Slam Breathing occurs whenever you turn your body and throw a major punch. As in freestyle, as your body rotates and your arm begins to rise out of the water, tilt your head to the side to take a breath. It should be a small movement, just enough to take the mouth out of the water and follow the rotation of the body.

Larsen's parents took him to the sea on the day he was born. It's been there forever.
Raised by the ocean in Capitola-by-the-Sea, Larsen grew up playing surfing, water polo and lifeguard rescue before joining the Navy SEALs. As a member of the naval component of US Special Operations, he developed only the mental and physical skills to succeed in submersion.
As a lieutenant, Larsen led a team of special forces on covert operations overseas. In his last assignment, he was deployed as a squad leader in support of the Global War on Terror; As a SEAL officer in the US Special Operations Command, he attained the rank of lieutenant commander. Larsen is also a two-time national champion in open water swimming and has offered her talents with Team Rubicon Global. Throughout the year, he participates in charity events such as the Navy SEAL Hudson River Swim to raise money and visibility for soldiers.
The Making Of A Seal
I recently sat down with Larsen to talk about the experiences that made him a great waterman and how the rest of us can attack the waves like a Navy SEAL.
Kaj Larsen: My introduction to water came from my parents. The day I was born, my mother took me to watch the waves. My father was a great sportsman, swimmer and sailor. He subscribed to the ancient Russian technique of raising children, which says that children are not afraid of water for the first six months of life. So, to my mother's shock, he took me to the pool when I was about three months old. I had this early initiation and it felt really good when it got me down. Growing up in the Santa Cruz area with a strong tradition of water sports, I think those early experiences definitely shaped who I am. From there I think it was a natural evolution that I joined the Navy SEALs.
Basic Underwater Demotion/SEAL Training (aka BUD/S) What was the water training like to join the Navy SEALs?
My favorite part of BUD/S was the water part, but with this workout you have this complex relationship with water. The ocean is beautiful and calm, but it is also extremely dangerous. One of the toughest challenges they give you is 'Surf Torture', where you're paired shoulder-to-shoulder with the rest of the class as cold waves crash into you and drop your body temperature drastically. This continues until you are near hypothermia and can't stop shaking. There are many physical challenges such as carrying a log or obstacle, but this cold water weakens most boys' will to continue fighting. It's these stunts where the boys are cold, wet and hungry that really make them call and give up. They are so harsh and punishing that I have seen guys come out of the experience with aquaphobia or some kind of fear of water.

One of the tests is a 50-meter underwater swim that begins with a summer jump. The passing standard doesn't require you to leave the pool yourself, just build a wall. Most people who take this test are almost exhausted by the time they hit the wall. There are many opportunities that guys pass up
