In Cambridge, people gathered in King's Parade at 6pm on Friday to express their support for all Cambridge University students, faculty and staff, and those affected by the war. It follows a meeting in the city on Thursday night in protest against Russia's actions.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister said Britain would "soon" level personal sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Boris Johnson told NATO leaders in a virtual meeting on Friday that Britain would echo initiatives announced by the EU to target the Russian leader.
Referring to Mr Putin's desire to reclaim territory that had previously fallen under the Soviet Union, he said Russia was "part of a revanchist mission to reverse the post-Cold War order".
A spokesman said: "The group warned that the Russian president's ambitions may not end there and that this is a Euro-Atlantic crisis with global consequences."

The Prime Minister also used the meeting to urge "immediate action" over Russia's ban on the Swift payment system to "cause the greatest pain" to the Kremlin.
The move to punish President Putin and Mr Lavrov comes after the European Union announced it was considering a similar move against the two men as it introduced its latest round of measures along with the US and Britain.
The government has faced criticism that it has not yet gone far enough despite measures to crack down on five other oligarchs, and target more than 100 businesses and individuals.
With Russian troops continuing to advance on Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said sanctions had so far done nothing to stop the Russian offensive.
Who, What And Where: Raf Mildenhall Facts & Figures
Western officials have warned that the Russians could resort to thermobaric weapons - used to produce powerful, high-temperature explosions - if the Ukrainian military resistance continues its offensive.
Despite launching the offensive on Thursday, Russian forces have yet to take some of the main population centers and officials believe they have failed to achieve most of their initial objectives for the invasion.
One officer noted that the Russians may have thermobaric weapons in their arsenal and have used them in previous conflicts.
"My fear would be that if they don't meet their timetable and goals, they would be indiscriminate in their use of violence," said the officer.

Britain's Chief of Defense Intelligence, Lieutenant General Sir Jim Hockenhull, said Russian forces were continuing to move towards Kyiv on two lines of advance.
"Their aim is to surround the capital, ensure control of the population and change the regime," he said. "Ukrainian armed forces continue to offer strong resistance."
Although there have been reports of sporadic fighting in the northern suburbs, it is believed that most of the main Russian units are still more than 50 km away.
President Putin stepped up his inflammatory rhetoric, urging Ukrainian soldiers to lay down their weapons, saying he would negotiate with them more easily than "that bunch of drug addicts and neo-Nazis who hid in Kyiv and took all Ukrainian people hostage”.

After the NATO meeting, the secretary general of the alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, said that it is clear that the goals of the Kremlin "are not limited to Ukraine."
"We are facing a new normal in European security, where Russia openly challenges the European security order and uses force to achieve its goals," he said.
He said the alliance is sending thousands of extra troops to the eastern member states - which fear they could be the next target of Russian aggression - "doing what is necessary to protect and defend every ally and every an inch of NATO territory”.
Defense secretary Ben Wallace earlier dismissed calls for Britain to help establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine because the RAF fighting Russian jets would trigger a "war across Europe".

"He is trying to invade Ukraine. He will not stop after Ukraine. He will use everything in the Baltic States. He does not believe that the Baltic states are really countries," Mr Wallace told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
"And we will have to stand up to him. Now, I can't start a European war and I won't start a European war, but what I will do is help Ukraine fight every street with every piece of equipment we can get to, and we will support them, and that's the reality. .”

Although it is not usual to comment on modern military matters, we believe it is significant to mention the recent announcement to close several historic air bases in the UK. RAF Mildenhall is by far the most significant of these bases, having been operated more or less continuously by the US Air Force since 1950; first as a Strategic Air Command center with B-29 Superfortresses, then B-47s, and later U-2s and SR-71s. During this period, there were always a large number of air refueling aircraft, and this continues to this day with the KC-135 Stratotankers of the 100th Air Refueling Wing. The reconnaissance role also continued with the RC-135 Rivet Joint aircraft of the 95th Reconnaissance Squadron. Those units will move on to bases in Germany, as will the MC-130s and CV-22s of the 352nd Special Operations Group.
Raf Mildenhall Incident: Shots Fired At Us Air Base In Suffolk After Car Forces Entry Past Checkpoint, Police Reveal
RAF Mildenhall was a cold war base, playing a significant role during the first Gulf War, as well as the more recent conflicts in the Middle East. It was also known as the "Gateway to the United Kingdom", as it was where most US military personnel and their families entered the UK. It has also hosted many important military airshows, such as their famous Air Festivals, and the International Air Tattoo.
The history of RAF Mildenhall goes back long before the first US Air Force units arrived though; the center celebrated its 80th year of operation in 2014. It was the starting point on October 20, 1934 for perhaps the most famous and most important air race in the history of aviation, the MacRobertson Air Race, a grueling air race between England and Australia. The center has also hosted kings and queens, with King George V standing there to review more than 350 of "his" planes as they flew overhead to celebrate the Queen's silver jubilee in 1935.

RAF Mildenhall was home to the men and machines of RAF Bomber Command during the Second World War; first with Vickers Wellingtons, then Short Stirlings, before finally the mighty Avro Lancaster called it home. Bomber Command crews flew over 8,000 troops from RAF Mildenhall and its support areas during the Second World War, dropping more than 23,000 tonnes of bombs on the enemy. It all came at great cost, with over 2,000 flyers paying the ultimate sacrifice. One of these men, Australian Pilot Officer Rawdon Hume Middleton, was posthumously awarded a Victoria Cross for bringing his crew home, despite suffering serious injuries during a bombing raid over Turin, Italy in Short Stirling BF372 on a night 28 November 1942. He is buried. in a small cemetery at the airport.

When RAF Mildenhall finally closes sometime in the next few years, it will bring to an end a truly remarkable story. The center will return to UK MOD management, and is likely to slip into history as another industrial or housing estate, with very few road names to remind people.
